Grace Mitchell
Consultant & Coach
Grace Mitchell has been an educational consultant in several states for almost 30 years, specializing in program design, leadership development and higher-education administration. In that role, she provides professional development for administrators and faculty in educational agencies including colleges, universities, community colleges, and public schools, as well as for medical agencies.
Grace also has taught at all levels from elementary school to graduate programs at such institutions as the Charlotte/Mecklenburg Schools, Central Piedmont Community College, Davidson College, Warren Wilson College, and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Her experience in public schools includes serving as a teacher, curriculum specialist, guidance counselor, administrator and training facilitator. She was also the state-wide curriculum coordinator for NCTeach, sponsored by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction and the North Carolina General Assembly.
At Davidson, she chaired the Education Department, creating and implementing all aspects of the Teacher Education Program. She was responsible for overseeing the national accreditation process as well as serving as a consultant to many other programs seeking national recognition. At Warren Wilson College, she also served as the chair of the Education Department, developing a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T) Program.
At UNC-Charlotte, she was coordinator of the doctoral (Ed.D.) program in education, teaching graduate-level courses and advising 90+ students, some seeking doctorates for school-level administrative positions. Others in the program were pursuing an Ed.D. degree in a “Community Track” that Grace created for students from more than 25 disciplines outside the field of public education. Each student followed an individualized curriculum that she designed to reflect the unique interests of that student. Her varied research projects resulted in the publication of several books and many articles.
She holds a B.S. in History and Education from East Carolina University, an M.Ed. from Duke University, an M.A. in History from UNC-Charlotte, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Virginia. Her studies emphasized program development, educational leadership, training, and adult education.
