Writing for Results Program Description

Writing for Results, with a maximum of 12 participants, is a 12-hour workshop, plus a coaching session for each individual participant. In that coaching session, each participant will spend 15 to 20 minutes with the Writing Coach, who will review their individual writing samples.

The course combines writing practices, peer critiques and expert coaching, using writing samples each participant provides in advance, as well as some of the company’s own writing samples.

Unclear or otherwise poor business writing can confuse people, fail to persuade them to take necessary action, and often can lead to poorer business results. Writing for Results teaches participants how to get started writing and how to write clear, concise, correct documents that are courteous and professional in tone and can persuade readers to pursue a course of action (particularly to avoid risk) while avoiding common grammatical and spelling errors.

Recommended CPE Credit: 12 Hours

Field of Study: Communications & Marketing

Program Level: Intermediate

Learning Objectives: By focusing on the 5 C’s—clear, concise, courteous/professional, compelling, and correct—Writing for Results will teach participants how to:

  • Present themselves more professionally through their writing.

  • Help readers grasp important information quickly and accurately—especially clearly defined issue statements/risk statements.

  • Avoid misunderstanding that wastes readers’ time.

  • Make points persuasively – particularly, how to motivate action to mitigate risk.

  • Use time and mental energy efficiently as they write.

  • Avoid common errors.

Instructional Delivery Method: Group Internet-Based

Prerequisites:
The only prerequisite for Writing for Results is knowledge of college-level written and spoken English consistent with customary job demands for U.S. accountants/auditors. The workshop is not a remedial writing course.

Advance Preparation:
Four to five weeks before the workshop, participants will be asked to provide 3-5 unedited samples of their professional writing. Ideally, participants will select these samples in consultation with their respective supervisors. They will send these samples to the writing coach. The coach will review the samples and return them to participants before the workshop with detailed comments and suggestions. These samples will be used during the workshop and also will be the main subject of the participants’ one-on-one coaching sessions on the afternoon of the final day of the workshop.

“The most important thing to me is that a program like this is customized to meet the goals of my business—not just something that's off the shelf and is boring, irrelevant, or not germane to what we're talking about.

You get a high level of customization with them—the content, and the commitment to make sure the program is put together executed well, and that there's proper follow-up. I think that's what really makes them stand out as a provider.”
